“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous 2 our liberties than standing armies. If the American ppl ever allow private banks 2 control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks & corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the ppl of all property till their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should b taken from the banks & restored 2 the ppl, 2 whom it prprly belongs."

Survival fishing

One of the blogs I read recently had a guest post on survival fishing. But they were discussing rod and reel fishing. As a survival plan this in my humble opinion is a poor plan. Possibly to feed yourself. However most of us will have more than just ourselves to feed. With a rod and reel you are covering one little area. What if the fish are not in that area, aren't in the mood for bait you are using, etc? While I like rod and reels and in fact have a bunch yeah one of my obsessions. If needing to feed many I would setting trot lines or some call them trout lines.Trot is correct but no matter. Trot lines are a long heavy main line 200 lb test or better with many dropper lines spaced a foot or so apart. Set lines are are just a heavy line tied to something so fish cant pull it in.Limb lines obvious line tied to limb.Yo yo's are a mechanical reel you tie to a limb or solid tie off it sets the hook and keeps tension on fish for you.If fishing a lake or pond jug lines old bleach, milk, laundry soap, pop, etc bottle with a drop line is tossed out.Large buoyant jug wears fish out.You row or wade out pulling up jug.

There are many ways to fish. Set traps be they hardware cloth (heavy mesh) live trap that fish swim in but can't get out.Setting conibear or similar type trap to actually slam shut on fish.

Bait can range from food you may have little pieces of bread or dough to catch minnows then put them on hooks to catch larger fish. You can catch grasshoppers and crickets. Many ways to catch them if not familiar Research it.Grubs can be dug up.Maggots from dead animals can be harvested, yuuck but we are talking survival here no time to be squeamish.Crawdads are prime bait for many fish. These can be hand caught, trapped,or use fishing pole.

Use your imagination so many ways to catch fish.I have barely scratched the surface.Water is not just for fish either! Crawdads, frogs, turtles, muskrats, beavers, nutria, snakes, geese, ducks. All can be found above or below the water. All are edible, some are actually top end eats.Yuummy.Fishing is not just a rod n reel.

Be Prepared!

  1. Any excuse to go fishing is always welcome!

We used to go camping, taking nothing but cooking oil, onions and potatoes, cornmeal, and some coffee and beer!

That pretty much covered all the meals! The fish (if we caught any) were a welcome addition!

  5. Among other things I wear on my belt a Leatherman Wave on an 18" lanyard to keyring on belt clip. In the Wave pouch are 40' 50 lb and 40' 65 lb test spiderwire braided fishline, a magnesium firestarter (cut in two lengthwise), 8 fish hooks, needle threader, and three sewing needles. I can fish with handline or cane pole and/or set jug lines, and limb lines.
I can use the Wave to fashion fish traps of chicken wire, etc

  6. http://vlad-unclevlad.blogspot.com/2009/07/hornfrogs-fish-story.html

My pal Hornfrog tells this story.
I took some young folks down to the Bosque River, west of Waco, Texas to do some fishing. One of my nephews was inthe group. All the kids had bought fancy and fairly high priced fishing rods and tackle, etc. I brought the fishing kit I had in my pocket which just has essentials in it. I did not bring a rod and reel at all. The kids thought I was not going to do any fishing because I had not brought a rod and reel. When we got down to the river and settled on a good spot they all started casting around. I pulled up a stout weed that grows in this area, stripped it down to just the main stem and rigged up a simple and very basic rig. Since the Bosque is really just a small river and in many places not much more than a creek, I could get my hook into the middle very easily. Using a little feathered jig I quickly caught six nice (keeper size) small mouth bass, two perch and four brim. I had a nice stringer of fish and all pan size. Nothing big but "good eats." The kids were amazed at this silly demonstration. They were catching some fish but could not believe I had matched or out done each of them with their fancy rigs. My nephew put up his rod and fished with a rig I made up for him and he laughed every time he caught something with my "poor boy" outfit.. He told, "Man, I paid $80.00 for that rod and reel but I can catch the same fish with this thing!" I took the jig off of mine, caught some small grasshoppers beside the creek and did just as well with them.
The kids had never realized that fishing could really be done and very simply with just some line, hooks, split shot sinkers, etc., which could all be carried in a small container, a 35mm film canister, in their pockets. That little session made my day!

  8. (I will make room in butt pouch for two 65 lb test spiderwire lines with hook wrapped on a card.)
$1.00 at the thrift store for two 5.25"x4"x1" dark green zipper pouches. One holds
    100 rounds Remington Subsonic,
    a box magazine,
    two bottles water pills,
    ten patches,
    a thong
    a penny to adjust scope,
an Allen wrench for scope mount screws
    small fresnel lens.
The thong has 8" bead chain at one end, a bowline at other end, a bowline 8" from the end. Place patch in a loop sticking through bowline. The thong comes taut and holds the patch securely. If the patch sticks pull it out backwards. Not good to break the thong and leave a patch in the bore. Two black cable ties secure the pouch to my Marlin 25N 22LR rifle.

  10. I use Spiderwire braided, a superior fishline. 50 lb test braided is same diameter as 12 lb test mono. It is unlikely to break when to lose line and fish may mean no supper.
